I don’t know why I expected to be hit with light and glory when the elevator doors opened at the top of the run. But, as the two metal panels hissed apart, I had to practically squint to see into the dark room. I heard something, voices, high pitched, crying or singing come from inside the penthouse, from a room deeper in the suite. I grabbed my wolf head cane and stepped into the dark. The elevator doors closed behind me. I stayed put and waited for my eyes to adjust in the dim.

Flickering light came from beneath a door straight ahead, along with the sound of weeping or chortling. I moved across the floor. I didn’t notice until I rested one hand on the cold knob that I had been rubbing the back of my neck so hard that it ached.

The knob turned in my hand. I tried to back away, but someone pushed from the other side so forcefully that the door cracked me in the head, ringing my bell and sending me reeling. I backpedaled across the room and tripped over something squat, an ottoman perhaps. I hit the floor so hard that I saw stars and almost blacked out.

Before I managed to stand up, or even to get my bearings, someone planted a bare foot on my chest and pinned me down. I looked up and caught the silhouette of what could only be Cedric Boone with his signature high and tight flattop, backlit by gold candlelight coming from the other room. I heard music in the background, something slow and groovy, Barry White or Teddy Pendergrass. I craned my neck and caught a glimpse of two frightened girls, both in their early twenties, both wearing silk nighties. By the look in Boone’s eye, I still couldn’t determine if I had heard the bimbos laughing or crying.

“Get lost, girls,” Cedric said over his shoulder. Both women moved out of view.

That’s when I noticed that Boone was aiming a pistol right at my face. And not just any pistol. A custom-made work of art, gold plated with ivory grips. Judging by the economy-sized barrel, I was looking at .50 calibers of cranium blaster.

“Who are you, and who do you work for?” Boone asked.

“Hey, man, lower the cannon, I’m just a messenger.”

“A messenger who managed by some kind of dumb luck to get past my security.”

“It wasn’t easy. You might want to send your lift operator in for repairs.”

“Give me your message, errand boy, then I will decide whether or not to spread your brains all over my expensive rug.”

“Can you let me up? I got a package from an acquaintance of yours.”

Boone crushed his foot down hard, pushing the air out of me. I whined out a little sound and grabbed his cannonball-sized calf with both hands. I swear, my eyes felt like they were about to pop. He cocked his freak show of a pistol and crunched his face up into a rage that made me think of a ticking time bomb.
